Mackle Petfoods is delighted to have been named Employer of Choice 2026 at the Responsible Business Awards in Northern Ireland, organised by Business in the Community NI.

The award recognises organisations that demonstrate a strong commitment to creating a workplace where people feel valued, supported and empowered to succeed. For Mackle Petfoods, this recognition reflects an ongoing focus on investing in people, fostering an inclusive culture and creating opportunities for employees to develop rewarding careers.

Putting People at the Heart of the Business

As a family-owned business with deep roots in Northern Ireland, Mackle Petfoods has long believed that its success is built on the dedication, talent and commitment of its people. Creating a positive workplace experience remains a key priority, with continued investment in learning and development, employee wellbeing and workplace engagement.

In 2024 alone, Mackle Petfoods invested £250,000 beyond mandatory training requirements to support employee development and career progression. The business also strengthened partnerships with schools, colleges and universities, helping to create meaningful opportunities for apprentices, placement students and graduates considering careers in manufacturing, engineering and business.

To support employees throughout their career journey, a formal mentoring programme was introduced, providing guidance and development opportunities for apprentices, graduates and placement students. Leadership coaching and tailored management training have also helped strengthen a values-led culture across the organisation.

Creating an Inclusive and Supportive Workplace

With colleagues representing 11 language groups, Mackle Petfoods is committed to ensuring every employee feels included, informed and connected.

The introduction of the multilingual PAWS App has enhanced communication across a diverse 24-hour workforce, while employee feedback continues to play an important role in shaping workplace policies and wellbeing initiatives.

Employee wellbeing is another important area of focus. Investments in wellbeing rooms, Mental Health First Aiders, health and financial wellbeing clinics, and enhanced employee benefits help ensure support is available to colleagues when they need it most.

Mackle Petfoods also became the first large food manufacturing company in Northern Ireland to introduce the Real Living Wage, reinforcing its commitment to fair and responsible employment practices.

Investing in Future Talent

Developing the workforce of tomorrow remains a key part of Mackle Petfoods’ people strategy.

Through strengthened educational partnerships and expanded development programmes, apprenticeships increased by 250%, while student placements increased by 900%. Since 2023, six apprentices and graduates have progressed into permanent roles within the business, helping to build a strong pipeline of future talent and skills.

Making a Difference for Employees

The impact of Mackle Petfoods’ people-focused approach is reflected in employee feedback.

An independent survey, completed by more than 90% of employees, found that:

• 90% would recommend Mackle Petfoods as an employer.
• 93% understand what is expected in their role.
• 88% feel their role matters and that they are adequately trained.

These results highlight the importance of creating an environment where employees feel supported, listened to and equipped to succeed.

Recognition from the Judging Panel

The judging panel commended Mackle Petfoods for its commitment to its people, stating:

“This locally grown, family-run business puts people at its heart each and every day. With a diverse workforce, the company listens to everyone, including all those representing 11 language groups. The company evidenced all of its activity with strong statistics and a demonstrable impact on its profits.”

Their comments recognise the positive culture that continues to be built across the organisation and the role employees play in driving the business forward.
